The pathway: Belong, Believe, Become

Three courses, taken in order. Every class is a video to watch, questions to talk over with other people, a short quiz and a few resources. Finish a class and the next one opens. Finished classes stay open for good.

Why this order

Most training starts by telling you what to believe and hopes that belonging and becoming follow. We have it the other way round, because that is the order God works in. He is at work in a person before they know it. Faith then receives what Christ has already done. And grace goes on to form that person and send them out. Belong, Believe, Become is just those three movements, one course for each.

Belong

Nobody comes to God because they thought of it first. By the time you are curious, He has been working for years. Belong traces that: the God who moves first, the story the Bible is telling, what a human being is for, what went wrong, and the God who goes looking for people who are not looking for Him. It ends with the church — a table you can sit at before you have your answers straight.

Believe

Belonging is not the end of it. There comes a point where you have to decide what you make of Jesus. Believe puts the case: who He claimed to be, what the cross achieved, whether the resurrection happened, and what turning and trusting actually involve. It ends with new birth and assurance, and with the Holy Spirit, who makes all of it real rather than merely true. The course comes in two halves, Foundation of the Faith I and II.

Become

Then God gets to work on you. Become is about holiness of heart and life, which we take to be a real expectation for ordinary Christians and not a calling for a gifted few. It covers how God changes a person and the habits He does it through, faith that shows itself in love, why nobody manages this alone, how to talk about Jesus without a script, and being sent — because the point of a discipled person is the next person after them.

Faith is not a feeling you work up on a good morning. It is trusting a person.

What a class involves

Four parts, every time, in the same order.

1. The video

One teaching session, on the class page. It plays on a phone as well as a laptop. Stop it, go and make the tea, come back: the site remembers how much of it you have actually watched. Skipping to the end does not count as watching, because that would only be cheating yourself.

2. Discussion questions

These are printed on the page for you to talk over with other people — a group, a friend, a leader, someone over a meal. There is no box to type into. Nothing you say is stored, seen or marked. They are the part of a class that a screen cannot do for you, and the part most worth doing.

3. A short quiz

A few multiple-choice questions on what the video covered. It is not an exam and nobody is ranked. Its only job is to make sure the main thing in the class actually landed. You need all the answers right, and you can try again as many times as you need. Getting one wrong costs you nothing except another minute. Once you pass, the quiz stays on the class as a record of your answers.

4. Resources

Whatever is worth keeping from that class: a passage to read, a page to print for your group, a link worth following. Resources for your classes are yours to use once you are signed in.

What completion means

A class is complete when you have watched the video through and answered every quiz question correctly. Both, not either. When that happens the next class opens on its own — there is no button to press and nothing to submit. Finish the last class of a course and the next course opens. Finish all three and the complementary courses open, on particular subjects, as they are published.

Completed classes never close. Go back and watch a video again a year later if you want to: your progress does not reset and nothing is taken away.
